“O Allah, let this moon (month) pass over us with blessings, Imaan, safety, and in the belief of Islam. Grant us the ability to act on the actions that You love and Pleases You. (O moon) My Lord and Your Lord is Allah”.
May Almighty Allah bless our country and the world with peace and harmony, eliminate our difficulties and restore our lives with happiness and prosperity in this Islamic New Year of Hijri 1445.
The Hijri calendar is a calendar system which was established during the reign of Caliph Umar (RA) based on the Hijrah (migration), which was a significant event in Islam. This calendar system was introduced on the basis of Hijrah, which was a renaissance of Islamic history, in order to have a unique practice for Muslims, just as every society has its own culture and traditions.
The beginning of the new Hijri year reminds us of the Hijrah (migration) of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam towards Madinah and it is also reminds us of the Madinah Charter, which was established as a model constitution for the world.
The Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar. It consists of twelve lunar months and is determined by sighting of the crescent each month. These months are: Muharram (first month of the year), Safar, Rabeeunil Awwal, Rabeeunis Saani, Jumaadal Oola, Jumaadal Aakhirah, Rajab, Shabaan, Ramadhaan, Shawwaal, Dhul Qa’dah, Dhul-Hijjah. Among these, Muharram, Rajab, Dhul Qa’dha and Dhul Hijjah have been decalred as sanctified Months in Islam. The beginning of the respective month is determined by sighting the crescent each month.
The Islamic Hijri calendar which is used for chronological purposes, is based on the Quran and Sunnah and plays an important role in the lives of Muslims. It is also necessary to perform annual acts of religious worship such as Zakat, fasting, and Hajj.
A month in the Islamic lunar calendar may consist of 29 days or 30 days. And a lunar year may have 354 or 355 days. The number of days in a year in the Islamic lunar calendar is ten or eleven days less than the number of days in the Gregorian calendar.
The Holy Qur’an mentions that changes in time such as day, week, month and year allow people to be refreshed and to renew their thoughts in order to turn to Almighty Allah.
And He is the One who made the day and the night following each other, for the one who wishes to be mindful or wishes to show gratitude. (Surah Furqan Verse 62)
So, on the birth of this New Hijri Year, let us revive ourselves, turn towards Almighty Allah and embrace compassion, justice, fairness, coexistence, patriotism in our lives and live as exemplary citizens to our Motherland and the entire world.
