ACJU’s Islamic Guidelines for Voters and Candidates

Public Announcement to Voters and Candidates:

In Islam, a complete way of life, guidance is provided across all spheres – faith, worship, ethics, social responsibility, culture, politics, and beyond. Elections, from an Islamic perspective, represent an opportunity to contribute to the noble task of nation-building through the democratic process.

Voting is not just a civic right but, in Islamic terms, it represents ‘Shafa’at’ (recommendation), ‘Waqalat’ (representation), and most importantly, ‘Shahadat’ (witnessing). It is a solemn responsibility, and it must be truthful and just. Accordingly, we advise voters to reflect on the following key points while casting their ballots:

1. The candidates we elect should be individuals who regard politics as a noble responsibility toward the betterment of society.

2. Ensure that your vote supports those who possess the vision, love for the country, and the ability to lead effectively.

3. Support candidates who refrain from inciting ethnic and religious divisions and who uphold values of good conduct and virtue.

4. Choose leaders who respect the laws of the land and avoid engaging in violence.

5. Vote for individuals who show respect toward alternative parties and candidates, maintaining a civilized approach.

6. Refrain from engaging in inappropriate criticism and using abusive language in online platforms.

7. Avoid defaming or insulting political party leaders and publicly disparaging them.

In summary, it is our sacred duty to ensure that our votes support candidates who are both righteous and competent.
Guidelines for Parties and Candidates

We expect all political parties and candidates participating in the elections to adhere to the following guidelines for the betterment of our country and society:

1. Aspire to promote good governance, foster harmony and unity among all communities, and contribute to the development and prosperity of Sri Lanka.

2. Serve as role models in upholding the values of good governance and ethical leadership.

3. Recognize that leadership is both a blessing and a profound responsibility.

4. Ensure that your personal, family, and socio-political lives are guided by spiritual and moral values.

5. Muslim candidates should embody values such as simplicity, sacrifice, and dedication, serving both the Islamic faith and the Muslim community.

6. Avoid abuse of power, violence, and sowing enmity; instead, act with honesty and fairness at all times.

7. Ensure that no individual or group is subjected to injustice as a result of your actions or policies.

8. Refrain from uncivil or disparaging criticism of opposing candidates and parties during the campaign.

9. Speak and act in a manner that does not harm the sentiments of other communities while advocating for the rights of your own.

10. Strive to create an environment in which all religions can coexist freely, working together across party lines to promote shared values.

11. As lawmakers, you are responsible for safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and resources. Do not support laws or actions that contradict fundamental human nature, values, or religious beliefs.

We trust that all candidates will act in accordance with these principles to serve the country honorably and uphold its integrity.
