All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama is pleased to issue this message on the International Women’s Day. Islam has explicated responsibilities and rights for both men and women while defining their respective status in the most practical and sensible way.
Islamic outlook for women is very lucid and logical. Islam, while terming women’s rights and duties, has demonstrated practical examples throughout the history by assuring women’s role and contribution in economic and social matters.
The Qur’an says: “And those who believe and do good deeds, whether male or female they will enter Paradise, and will not be wronged a whit” (Sura An Nisa – 124). Equal justice for both genders has been emphasized through this verse of Holy Qur’an.
The Prophet Muhammed (Sal) said “Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim” (Bai’haki). Islam insists that each and every Muslim regardless of their gender should master education emphasizing that education is a right and responsibility of females too. The Prophet Muhammed (Sal) used to gather women and teach them on a particular day upon an appeal made by women. (Buhari)
Islam also grants the right to women for initiating a divorce if they have an acceptable and valid reason to abandon their men. Also women has the right to perform Sadaqa (Charity) from her wealth and spend it on her, husband, children, family and whomever they wish without exceeding limits of extravagance.
The Quran provides guidance as follows on inheritance rights of women: “Men receive a share of what their parents and relatives leave, and women receive a share of what their parents and relatives leave; be it little or much—a legal share (prescribed by Allah).” (Sura An Nisa – 7).
The Prophet Muhammed (Sal) said that “The best of you is the one who is best to his wife, and I am the best of you to my wives” (Thirmizi). May Allah make us among those who treat their wives with compassion and love.
