Relationships with parents should be greatly honored and it is an obligation upon the children to treat them with kindness and compassion. Negligence of the duties towards parents is considered as major sin in Islam.
Parents bear the responsibility of caring for the physical, intellectual and spiritual well-being of their children. They work towards the objective of bringing up their children as self-disciplined and independent citizens, by making several sacrifices and therefore they expect their children to treat them with respect and kindness.
The Holy Qur’an says about parents:
“Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and do good to parents. If any one of them or both of them reach old age, do not say to them: ‘Uff’ (a word or expression of anger or contempt) and do not scold them, and address them with respectful words,” (17:23)
“And submit yourself before them in humility out of compassion, and say, “My Lord, be merciful to them as they have brought me up in my childhood.” (17:24)
“A man came to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and said, “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! Who is more entitled to be treated with the best companionship by me?” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Your mother.” The man said. “Who is next?” The Prophet said, “Your mother.” The man further said, “Who is next?” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Your mother.” The man asked for the fourth time, “Who is next?” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Your father. “ (Sahih Bukhari)

We should make effort to live as children who honor our parents and acquire their love, not only on the day declared by United Nations as the ‘International Parents Day’, but throughout our lives.
