Lunar Eclipse

ACJU/FRL/2022/37-384

2022.11.03 | 1444.04.07

Beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) stated:

“The sun and the moon are two signs against the signs of Allah; they do not eclipse on the death or life of anyone. So when you see the eclipse, remember Allah and say Takbir, pray and give Sadaqa.” (Saheehul Bukhari – 1044)

It is Sunnah to engage in Ibadaat such as Eclipse Prayer, Dua, Isthighfar and Sadaqah when the sun or moon is partially or completely eclipsed.

Since the time to perform the eclipse prayer in its proper form may not be sufficient when it is confirmed that the eclipse has happened, it is permissible to perform two Sunnah Rakahs like it is done before Luhar, without performing the Eclipse prayer in its prescribed form.

Astronomical reports suggest that a Lunar Eclipse will occur on Tuesday 08.11.2022, Insha Allah. It is reported that the said eclipse will be a total eclipse for many parts of the world and a partial eclipse for Sri Lanka.

It is stated that according to Sri Lankan time on that day it is reported, it may occur from 01:32 pm to 07:26 pm and for Sri Lanka from 05:57 pm to 07:26 pm, a partial eclipse may occur from 05:57 pm to 06:19 pm and a penumbral eclipse may occur during the remaining period.

Therefore when a partial eclipse is seen or confirmed to occur, the ACJU Fatwa Committee requests the Masjid Imams, Ulama, Masjid Trustees to encourage the people of their respective localities to engage in Sunnah acts such as Eclipse prayer, Dua, Istighfar and Sadaqah.
