“Safar” is the second month in the Islamic calendar. The month of Safar comes after Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar.
About the Month of Safar:
Some have misconceptions about this month as a month of misfortunes. Because of this false notion, some do not hold any Marriage ceremonies and avoid any form of celebration. This belief is completely baseless. This is one of the false beliefs held by the community before the advent of Islam. The Holy Quraan has provided clear guidelines about such superstitions:
“No calamity befalls (one), but with the leave of Allaah . And whoever believes in Allaah , He guides his heart. Allaah is All-Knowing about everything” (Soorah: Taghabun, Verse 11)
Aboo Hurairah (Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) said,
‘(There is) no ‘adwa (no contagious disease is conveyed without Allaah ‘s permission). nor is there any bad omen (from birds), nor is there any Hamah, nor is there any bad omen in the month of Safar. (Saheehul Bukhaari – 5757)
Scholars have interpreted the term ‘Safar’ as Safar of the misfortunes. Islam rejects all forms of superstitions and false beliefs which were dominant during the period of ‘Ayyaamul Jaahiliyyah’. Therefore, we Muslims should also be vigilant against such superstitious beliefs.
Significant Events of the Month Safar:
- Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) married Hadrat Khadeejah (Allah be pleased with her) in the Month of Safar.
- Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) conducted the marriage of Hadrat Fathima (Allah be pleased with her) and Hadrat Ali (Allah be pleased with him) in the Month of Safar in the year 2 A.H.
