On 23rd August 2024, the presidential candidate of the Samagi Jana Sandhanaya, Hon. Sajith Premadasa, along with members of parliament and key officials from the party, visited the head office of the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU) and participated in a meeting. The time for the meeting was arranged following a request made by the relevant parties.
Representing the ACJU, the president, general secretary, vice presidents, deputy secretaries, and members of the executive committee were present at the meeting. From the SJS, its leader Hon. Sajith Premadasa was accompanied by MPs Al-Haj Mujibur Rahman, Al-Haj S.M. Marikkar, and several other prominent figures.
The ACJU president, Mufti M.I.M. Rizwe, and the general secretary, Ash-Sheikh M. Arkam Nooramith, provided an introduction to the visiting SJS delegates about the work of the ACJU. They also explained that the ACJU is a religious institution that remains non-partisan, offering guidance for mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence among all Sri Lankan citizens.
President Mufti M.I.M. Rizwe reiterated that the ACJU is always accessible to all citizens. He also highlighted the importance of reading works such as ‘Islamic Jurisprudence: An International Perspective’ by C.G. Weeramantry and ‘The Muslims of Sri lanka – Thousand Year of ethnic Harmony’ by Lorna Devaraja, along with publications from the ACJU like ‘විවෘත දෑසින් ඉස්ලාම්‘, ‘සමාජ සංවාද‘, ‘Don’t be extreme’,” and “Manhaj” (which outlines the ACJU’s stance and guidance on religious matters for Sri Lankan Muslims). He urged all MPs and religious leaders to read these.
Furthermore, he emphasized that there should be an environment where all people, including Palestinians, can live in prosperity and peace, and he addressed several other issues.
Ash-Sheikh M. Arkam Nooramith, the general secretary, reminded attendees that voting is a trust, and both voters and candidates must act with great caution and responsibility in this matter.
During his speech, the presidential candidate of the SJS discussed his political principles and the social work he has undertaken. He praised the ACJU’s projects on coexistence and their coexistence centers, reminding that a society without ethnic, religious, and linguistic divisions must be fostered.
At the end of the event, Sinhala translations of the Qur’an and other publications by the ACJU were presented.
