Muharram is the first month of the Islamic Lunar Calendar. It is one of the four months honored in the Holy Quran as ‘Al-Ash’hurul Hurum’. This month is also known as the ‘Shahrullah’ (Month of Allah).
“Surely, the number of months according to Allah is twelve (as written) in the Book of Allah on the day He created the heavens and the Earth, of which there are Four Sacred Months.” (Surah Taubah Verse 36)
Some Significant Features of the Month of Muharram:
Fasting of the Month of Muharram
Abu Hurairah (Ral) reported that Rasoolullah (ﷺ) was asked as to which prayer was most excellent after the Farl prayer, and which fast was most excellent after the month of Ramadan. He (ﷺ) said: Prayer offered in the middle of the night and the most excellent fast after (fasting) in the month of Ramadan is the fast in Allah’s month al-Muharram. (Sahih Muslim 1163)
Aa’shura Fast
The entire Month of Muharram is honored and out of all the other days, the 10th day of Muharram has significant importance. It is Sunnah to observe fast on this day. It is known as the fast of Aa’shura. It is Sunnah to observe fast on the day of Aa’shura (10th) and on the day prior (9th) or on the following day (11th).
Abu Qatadah (Ral) reported that Allah’s Messenger, Rasoolullah (ﷺ) said: I seek from Allah that fasting on the day of Aa’shura may expiate the sins of the preceding year. (Sahih Muslim 1162)
Ibn ‘Abbas (Ral) reported that when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) fasted on the day of Aa’shura and commanded that it should he observed as a fast, they (his Companions) said to him: Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), it is a day which the Jews and Christians hold in high esteem. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: When the next year comes, God willing, we would observe fast on the 9th. But the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) died before the advent of the next year. (Sahih Muslim 1134)
Note: Aashura fast of this year should be observed on 29.07.2023
It is the Day in which Musa (Alaihissalam) And His Companions were saved.
Ibn’Abbas (Allah be pleased with both of them) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) arrived in Medina and found the Jews observing fast on the day of Aa’shura. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to them:
What is the (significance) of this day that you observe fast on it? They said: It is the day of great (significance) when Allah delivered Musa (Alaihissalam) and his people, and drowned the Pharaoh and his people, and Musa (Alaihissalam) observed fast out of gratitude and we also observe it. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: We have more right, and we have a closer connection with Musa (Alaihissalam) than you have; so Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) observed fast (on the day of ‘Ashura), and gave orders that it should be observed. (Sahih Muslim 1130)
