On this Zero Discrimination Day, the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama prays for the world to be a land of peace and social justice without any discrimination. Although this day was originally established to eradicate discrimination against people with the disease, it is now commemorated against all forms of discrimination such as races, religions, languages and color. Since 2014 this day has been commemorated worldwide.

Islam strongly and vehemently condemns all forms of discrimination such as race, religion, language, color and nationality. The Qur’an refers to the diversity that exists not only among human beings but also among other creations as a sign of Allah.

“And among His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the difference of your tongues and colors. Surely in this there are signs for the persons having knowledge.” (Sura Ar-Room: 22)

“O mankind, We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into races and tribes, so that you may identify one another. Surely the noblest of you, in Allah’s sight, is the one who is most pious of you. Surely Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.” (Sura Hujurat: 13)

At the same time, Islam urges all to act with justice and mercy.

“Allah enjoins to do justice and to adopt good behavior and to give relatives (their due rights), and forbids shameful acts, evil deeds and oppressive attitude. He exhorts you, so that you may be mindful.” (An-Nahl:90)

Zero Discrimination Day is commemorated in Sri Lanka as well. In 2021 it was commemorated with the theme that Sri Lanka must protect every Sri Lankan from discrimination on the basis of age, gender, appearance and beliefs.

In this day we are reminded of one of the main goals of Islam, which aims to break down the barriers and obstacles that have been erected between human beings due to discrimination, and we pray Almighty Allah to bless all of us to live with compassion, peace and tolerance and to build a society of justice free from all forms of discriminations.
