Assalaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakaatuh
The Day of Arafah falls on the ninth day of Dhul Hijjah, and fasting on this blessed day is a highly recommended Sunnah.
Numerous Hadiths mention the virtues of observing the fast of Arafah. The Prophet ﷺ said regarding the fast of the Day of Arafah:
“It expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year.” (Saheeh Muslim – 1162)
The standing of the pilgrims at Arafah in Makkah on the 9th day of Dhul Hijjah and the observance of the Arafah fast in other countries may differ due to variations in the commencement of the lunar month. This is the well-established and preferred opinion of the majority of Islamic scholars.
This position has also been upheld by many contemporary scholars, including Ibn Uthaymeen (Rahimahullah), as well as the fatwa committees of Darul Uloom Deoband and the Islamic Fiqh Academy of Rabitatul Alam al-Islami.
This is also the position of the Executive Committee and the Fatwa Committee of the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama. https://www.acju.lk/ta/arf-hjj-ftw/
Accordingly, in Sri Lanka this year, the 9th day of Dhul Hijjah falls on Wednesday, 27 May 2026, and the fast of Arafah should be observed on this day.
May Allah Ta‘ala grant us all the ability to observe the fast of Arafah sincerely and allow us to attain its immense virtues and rewards. Aameen.
