A special meeting was held on 23 September 2026 at the Headoffice of the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU) between religious leaders and representatives of leading Hindu organisations in Sri Lanka and members of the ACJU Executive Committee.
The meeting was convened following a request to the ACJU to make an appeal to the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia seeking the pardon and release of an individual named Anojan, who was convicted and sentenced by a Saudi Arabian court in connection with a case involving derogatory remarks concerning Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
At the outset, the visiting religious leaders and dignitaries expressed their regret and extended their apologies for the individual’s immature actions. They also emphasised that such erroneous and inappropriate conduct can never be accepted.
They further requested the ACJU to make possible efforts, within its capacity, to seek forgiveness for the mistake committed by the individual due to his lack of awareness, and to support efforts towards securing his release or the reduction of his sentence. A petition in this regard was also handed over to the ACJU during the meeting.
The meeting also emphasized the importance of promoting peaceful coexistence, mutual understanding and reconciliation among the different communities living in Sri Lanka. Discussions were held on the need for religious organizations from all communities to work together in advancing such efforts.
The meeting was attended by religious leaders and representatives from the All Ceylon Hindu Congress, International Hindu Mahasabha, Sri Lanka Brahmin Gurukkal Association, Hindu Gurukkal Association, and International Hindu Religious Peedam.
Representing the ACJU, the meeting was attended by the Vice President, General Secretary, Assistant General Secretary, members of the Executive Committee, as well as the Chief Executive Officer and General Manager.
