Special meeting convened regarding a letter from BBS

A special meeting was held at the Dehiwela Grand Jumu’ah Mosque on July 9, 2024, with representatives from various Muslim civil society organizations, legal experts, political personalities figures, professionals, scholars, and Masjid Trustees.

This gathering is part of the ACJU’s regular practice of consulting civil society organizations and prominent personalities every two months or as necessary.

The Bodu Bala Sena organization’s request for the ACJU’s assistance in securing a presidential amnesty for Ven. Gnanasara Thero, who was sentenced to four years in prison by the Colombo High Court, prompted a significant response.

During the discussion, it was unanimously decided that the ACJU, along with Muslim civil organizations and political personalities, would refrain from taking a position on the matter without first seeking the opinions of the entire Muslim community in Sri Lanka.

This decision emphasized the importance of respecting the country’s legal framework and the High Court’s ruling while considering the views and sentiments of the Muslim community.
