Conducting of Two Jumu’ah Prayers in one Masjid

Fatwa

All praise is due to Allah. Peace and Salutations be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu alaihi wasallam and his family members and companions.

Jumu’ah is one of the obligatory rites of Islam, and attending it is obligatory upon every Muslim male.

This has been emphasized in the Holy Qur’an & the Ahaadith of the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wasallam.

“O you who believe (Muslims)! When the call is proclaimed for the Salaah (prayer) on Friday (Jumu‘ah prayer), hasten to the remembrance of Allaah [Jumu‘ah religious talk (Khutbah) and Salaah (prayer)] and leave off business (and every other thing). That is better for you if you did but know!” (Surah al-Jumu’ah 62:9)

“Jumu’ah is a duty that is required of every Muslim, in congregation” (Narrated by Tariq ibnu Shihaab Raliyallahu Anhu, Abu Dawud: 1067)

The objective of Jumu’ah is that all Muslims of a particular vicinity gather in one Jumu’ah Masjid, weekly, to exhibit the symbol of unity in Islam.

Therefore, the jurists of Islam have always preferred that the Jumu’ah of a particular vicinity takes place in one Masjid. However, to avoid inconveniences, they have permitted conducting the Jumu’ah of a particular vicinity in more than one Masjid, under strict conditions.

Conducting two Jumu’ahs in one Masjid has not been the tradition of Islam since the time of Rasoolullah Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam up to date.

Taking into consideration the tradition and the local situation, our Fatwa Committee unanimously disapproves conducting two Jumu’ahs in one Masjid.

Furthermore, this is also the ruling given by the permanent committee for Islamic Research & Fataawa, Saudi arabia (Al-lajnah ad-daai’mah lil buhooth al-ilmiyyah wal-iftaa)

“The conducting of two Jumu’ah prayers in one Masjid is not permissible according to the Sharee’ah and we are unaware of any basis for it in Islam. In actual fact, only one Jumu’ah should be conducted in a vicinity, and more than one Jumu’ah should not be conducted except under religious concessions; such as the Jumu’ah Masjid being too far for some of the attendees, constraint of space, or other reasons that serve as a justification for the establishment of the second Jumu’ah; in such circumstance a Jumu’ah could be conducted in another place that fulfils the conditions of establishing Jumu’ah.”[1]

As a solution to your request to the All Ceylon Jammiyyathul Ulama regarding this issue, you may consider adjusting the time of Jumu’ah to facilitate the attendees, if necessary.

Allah knows best.
