In the Arabic language, the word “Rabī‘” means “spring.” The season of spring brings beauty, greenery and prosperity to the earth. Similarly, our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who was born in the month of Rabī‘ al-Awwal, came to humanity bearing the universal message of Prophethood, bringing the light of divine guidance, deliverance, success, liberation, peace and prosperity to all of humankind.
All the Prophets sent by Allah the Almighty to this world conveyed the same fundamental teachings concerning the Oneness of Allah (Tawḥīd), Prophethood (Risālah) and the Hereafter (Ākhirah). The final Messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, was likewise sent to this world as a mercy and blessing from Allah the Almighty to fulfil this very mission.
The following verses of the Holy Qur’an clearly highlight this:
“It is He who has sent among the unlettered a Messenger from themselves, reciting to them His verses, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom.” (Surah al-Jumu‘ah: 2)
“And We have not sent you except as a mercy to the worlds.” (Surah al-Anbiyā’: 107)
Accordingly, the month of Rabī‘ al-Awwal, in which Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was born, holds many special virtues and significance. The historically significant occasion of the birth of the Noble Prophet ﷺ, known as Mīlād al-Nabī, is a momentous occasion celebrated throughout the world as an expression of joy and happiness.
The Prophet ﷺ served as a guide and an exemplary model for humanity. He treated everyone with love, kindness and good character, without discrimination. He dedicated his life to promoting human dignity, the rights of children, the rights of women and harmony among different communities. He always upheld justice under all circumstances and lived with compassion towards the poor and needy and cared for orphans. He introduced the just constitution known as the Constitution of Madinah, which embraced a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society. He achieved remarkable success in both spiritual and worldly spheres. It is for these reasons that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is recognised as one of the greatest human beings to have made a profound impact on the course of human history.
Through Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Allah brought Prophethood to its completion and entrusted him with the responsibility of guiding humanity towards the Straight Path until the Day of Judgment. Thus, our beloved Prophet ﷺ was the ultimate guide for all aspects of human life. His entire life was filled with beautiful examples and exemplary conduct for humankind. The Holy Qur’an states:
“Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example.” (Surah al-Aḥzāb: 21)
When it comes to expressing our love and attachment to the Prophet ﷺ, at the very least, it is our duty and responsibility as his Ummah to frequently invoke Ṣalawāt and Salām upon him (Ṣallallāhu ‘Alayhi wa Sallam, May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him), to honour him and invoke Ṣalawāt whenever his name is mentioned or whenever we hear his name being mentioned, to love and respect his family (Ahl al-Bayt), his pure wives and his Companions (Ṣaḥābah), to study his Hadith, to learn and practise his Sunnah, to dedicate time to studying and understanding his noble personality and character, to introduce him in a beautiful manner to those who are unfamiliar with him and to correct the misconceptions held by those who have misunderstood him, thereby fostering a proper understanding and appreciation of the Noble Prophet ﷺ.
Allah the Almighty sent the Final Messenger ﷺ as a person of perfection in all aspects. He was perfect in his Ṣūrah, Sīrah and Sarīrah, his outward appearance, his life history and his inner character.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was an exemplary model in every sphere of life. He was an example in faith, worship, transactions, family life, noble character, personal conduct and social life, as well as in every other aspect of human existence.
The Noble Prophet ﷺ demonstrated through his life how one should be an exemplary father, an excellent husband, a courageous commander, an exemplary leader and an ideal teacher. In every sphere of life, he lived in a manner worthy of being followed.
It is indeed remarkable that the religion brought by our beloved Prophet ﷺ and the way of life he demonstrated are easy for all people to practise and are relevant and applicable to every circumstance.
The Islamic message brought by the Prophet ﷺ provided the foundation for success in both worlds. It called humanity towards peace and tranquillity and guided people from lives of ignorance and uncivilised conduct towards civilisation and moral excellence.
“O believers! Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet, nor speak loudly to him as you do to one another, lest your deeds become void without your knowledge.” (Surah al-Ḥujurāt: 2)
“Do not treat the calling of the Messenger among you as you treat one another’s calls.” (Surah al-Nūr: 63)
Through the above verses of the Holy Qur’an, we understand that Allah the Almighty has prohibited raising one’s voice above that of the beloved Prophet ﷺ and behaving disrespectfully towards him.
Accordingly, the noble Companions of the Prophet ﷺ loved him more than their own lives and treated him with utmost love, respect, honour and exemplary manners.
Therefore, let us too, in accordance with the guidance of Allah the Almighty, love our beloved Prophet ﷺ, who is dearer to us than our own lives, with the utmost respect and honour. Let us deeply study his life and character and sow the seeds of love and attachment towards him in the hearts of our children.
May Allah the Almighty enable all of us to live, until the Last Day, according to the path shown to us by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and may He bless us with the honour and privilege of being together with him in Jannah.
