On January 28, 2025, the trial resumed since the accused pleaded not guilty.
The hearing was postponed to April 28, 2025, due to the absence of the public prosecutor and court translator. Further an application under Section 191 of Criminal Pro. Code was made, enabling the complainant’s counsel to conduct the trial in order to prove charges framed against the accused.
As court granted permision, the prosecution, led by Senior Counsel Shiraz Noordeen, will lead evidence, including key testimonies from Mufti M.I.M. Rizwe and Azath Salih.
At the inception of reading out the charges to accused, the court offered leniency if he opted to plead guilty prior to resumption of trial.
This case, sensitive in Sri Lanka’s multi-ethnic context, highlights the administration of justice efficiency and procedural fairness. The April hearing will focus on leading evidence of key witnesses with logistical preparedness.
