Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu,
The month of Dhul-Hijjah is a sacred time that commemorates sacrifice and devotion. The first ten days of this month are among the most virtuous and blessed days in the Islamic calendar. Almighty Allah has emphasized their significance by swearing upon them in the Holy Qur’an:
“By the dawn, and by the ten nights…” (Surah Al-Fajr: 1–2)
Hazrat Ibnu Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and other religious scholars have interpreted “the ten nights” to refer to the first ten nights of Dhul-Hijjah.
Hazrat Ibn Abbas (RA) also reported that the beloved Prophet ﷺ said:
“There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days.” (Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith 2438)
Recommended acts of worship during the first Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah:
1. Fasting during the first nine days:
It is reported that the Prophet ﷺ used to fast during the first nine days of Dhul-Hijjah:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast the first nine days of Dhul-Hijjah, the Day of Aashura, three days of every month, and the first Monday and Thursday of each month.” (Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith 2437)
2. Fasting on the Day of Arafah:
The ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah is the Day of Arafah. Fasting on this day is a highly recommended Sunnah. Hazrat Abu Qatadah (RA) narrated:
“The Prophet ﷺ was asked about fasting on the Day of Arafah. He said: It expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year.’’ (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1162)
3. Engaging in Takbeer (Allahu Akbar), Tahleel (La Ilaha Illallah), and Tahmeed (Alhamdulillah):
It is reported that Hazrat Umar (RA) used to loudly recite Takbeer in his tent at Mina, and the people in the Mosque would hear him and join in. Even the market places would echo with Takbeer. Hazrat Ibn Umar (RA) would do the same throughout those days—in his tent, walking, sitting, and after Salaah.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“There are no days greater in the sight of Allah, nor are deeds more beloved to Him, than those done in these ten days. So recite a great deal of Tahleel, Takbeer, and Tahmeed during them.” (Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 5446)
4. Offering the Uldhiyah:
Hazrat Anas (RA) narrated:
“The Prophet ﷺ sacrificed two horned, white-and-black rams with his own hands. He mentioned Allah’s name and said the Takbeer, placing his foot on their sides.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1966)
The Udhiyyah sacrifice may be performed on the Eid day (10th of Dhul-Hijjah) and the three days that follow.
Let us strive to earn the immense rewards of these sacred days by fasting, increasing in good deeds, remembering Allah abundantly, and illuminating our nights with acts of worship.
