1. Unequivocal Condemnation:
With aching hearts and a sense of justice, we unequivocally denounce and condemn the ongoing genocide being committed with impunity against the civilians of Gaza by the Zionist regime of Israel. For months, civilian infrastructure – hospitals, schools, homes, and places of worship have been bombarded and razed to the ground. This is not a conventional war but a battle between the occupier and the occupied. It is a deliberate campaign of brutality and calculated ethnic cleansing. Thousands of innocent human lives, women and children, have been lost whilst champions of human rights and the powerful have been watching it in silence. Such silence in the face of the said atrocities amounts to complicity.
2. Call to the International Community:
We urge the international community, particularly the leaders of the developed world, champions of Human Rights to act decisively and expeditiously. The ongoing loss of Palestinian lives can no longer be overshadowed by political allegiances or economic interests. It is important that those who hold democratic and humanitarian values in their hearts take immediate, decisive, meaningful and tangible actions by imposing sanctions, cutting off military aid, and by bringing war criminals to justice. International civil society must unite in demanding an end to this violence forthwith.
3. Call to the Sri Lankan Government:
We strongly appeal to our own government of Sri Lanka to take a firm, principled stance in this matter. Sri Lanka must not remain silent or align with the Genocide in Gaza. Our nation is one fostered with Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic, and Christian teachings rooted in compassion, justice and sanctity of life. Neutrality in the face of the atrocities and genocide is an ethical failure. We appeal to our leaders to present the moral consciousness of our citizens and be on the right moral side of history.
4. Message to dear Sri Lankans
To the fellow Sri Lankans, we extend a message of solidarity, justice, peace and unity. In these critical moments, we call on everyone to stand firmly on grounds of humanity and provide support for Palestine through peaceful and lawful means including prayer, advocate for the oppressed, awareness-raising, and constructive dialogue.
While we call for justice, we equally emphasize the importance of maintaining peace, upholding the rule of law, and preserving the unity of Sri Lanka. Let our one voice be strong and moral, not destructive and divisive. Our voices must be raised with dignity, discipline, and respect for legal boundaries.
5. Faith/Religion and Politics:
It is crucial that we collectively educate ourselves and others equally of global events with accuracy and balance. Judaism, like all the great religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity is a religion of peace. Political ideologies such as Zionism should not be conflated with any such great religions. We must very clearly define political agendas as against faith and religion.
Furthermore, we acknowledge that the majority of citizens in the Western nations are not monolithic. Many stand in solidarity with oppressed communities worldwide advocating more vocally than others. It is time for unity not division, for building bridges of understanding than fostering hostility, promoting global solidarity and not alienation.
6. Conclusion:
Let us confront injustice not only in Gaza but anywhere in the world with dignity, wisdom, and within the framework of rule of law. Let our voices lift up truth, our hearts remain rooted in compassion, and our actions reflect the highest principles of our faith and citizenship. Together, we can fight for justice while safeguarding peace, harmony and dignity of our motherland Sri Lanka.
May justice prevail. May the oppressed find relief. And may we never forget that silence in the face of tyranny is betrayal.
