Urgent Appeal and Safety Guidance issued by the ACJU During Red Alert Conditions

The Department of Meteorology has reported that a cyclone/storm is approaching the island, and the next 12 hours are expected to be extremely critical and potentially dangerous. May Almighty Allah protect all of us from this calamity and keep everyone safe.

At this moment of trial, the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU) earnestly calls upon the Muslim community to stand together in compassion, solidarity, and service.

  1. Extend Immediate Assistance

The ACJU requests all Muslims to assist those affected to the best of their ability by providing:

  • Food and dry rations
  • Clothing and essential supplies
  • Temporary shelter support
  • Financial assistance
  • Volunteer services

All relief efforts should be coordinated through your local masjids and ACJU Divisional Branches, and collaboration with the relevant Local Government Authorities, to ensure proper organization, safety, and efficient distribution of aid.

This unified approach prevents duplication, ensures transparency, and allows support to reach the most vulnerable families quickly and responsibly.

  1. The Islamic Guidance on Charity During Calamities

Charity protects from harm (Bayhaqī in Shuʿab al-Īmān)

Acts of kindness become a shield from difficulties and draw the mercy of Allah.

Charity appeases Allah’s displeasure (Tirmidhī — 614, Ibn Ḥibbān)

Giving softens the heart and invites divine forgiveness.

Helping others brings Allah’s help (Muslim — 2699)

Whoever eases the burdens of others, Allah eases their burdens in return.

Calamities awaken our hearts, call us to repentance, test our patience, and offer opportunities for service and spiritual elevation.

Allah Most High commands:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اسْتَجِيبُوا لِلَّهِ وَلِلرَّسُولِ إِذَا دَعَاكُمْ لِمَا يُحْيِيكُمْ (سورة الأنفال 24)

“Believers, respond to God and His Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life…” (8:24)

Therefore, we respond by saying Alhamdulillāh ‘ala kulli hāl and then engaging in meaningful action.

  1. Islamic Etiquette During Strong Winds

The Prophet ﷺ prohibited cursing the wind, reminding us that it only blows by Allah’s command.

Imam Shafi stated that winds are among the armies of Allah, sent as mercy or warning as He wills.

  1. Supplications for Protection

The community is encouraged to recite:

Surah al-Falaq & Surah an-Nās (Nasā’ī,) For protection during strong winds and dark clouds. (Abu Dawood)

Du‘ā for strong winds:

اللَّهُمَّ إِني أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَهَا ، وَخَيْرِ مَا فِيهَا ، وخَيْرِ ما أُرسِلَتْ بِهِ ، وَأَعُوذُ بك مِنْ شَرِّهِا ، وَشَرِّ ما فيها ، وَشَرِّ ما أُرسِلَتْ بِهِ – (Muslim)

Another du‘ā:

اللَّهُمَّ لَقِحًا لَا عَقِيمًا

(Ibn Ḥibbān)

Du‘ā for beneficial rain:

اللهُمَّ حَوَالَيْنَا وَلَا عَلَيْنَا ، اللهُمَّ عَلَى الأَكَامِ وَالجِبَالِ وَالآجَامِ وَ الظَّرَابِ والاَودِيَةِ وَمَنَابِتِ الشَّجَرِ

(Saheehul Bukhari)

  1. Reflection of the Prophet ﷺ

Aisha (Rali) reported that the Prophet ﷺ would show concern upon seeing sudden clouds, fearing the possibility of punishment like previous nations who were destroyed by winds despite believing they were receiving rain.

This teaches us humility, vigilance, and turning to Allah in sincere prayer.

The ACJU urges the community to:

  • Give generously
  • Serve actively
  • Support responsibly
  • Work in coordination with masjids, ACJU Divisional Branches, and local government authorities
  • Pray for the safety and well-being of all Sri Lankans

May Allah protect our country, ease the suffering of the affected, and accept every effort made for His sake.
