“We have sent it (the Qur’ān) down in the Night of Qadr. And what may let you know what the Night of Qadr is? The Night of Qadr is much better than one thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend in it, with the leave of your Lord, along with every command. Peace it is till the debut of dawn.” (Surah Al Qadr (97))

Significance of the Laylathul Qadr (Night of Power)

  • The night in which the Holy Quran was revealed
  • The night which is better 1000 months
  • The night in which Angels, including Jibreel (Alaihissalam) descend to this world.
  • The night in which tranquility prevails.

About Laylathul Qadr

Laylathul Qadr (a dignified night) is one of the last ten nights of the month of Ramadaan. It is considered as one of the most important nights of the month of Ramadaan. This night commences from the time of sunset of the day, until the dawn of Fajr. The Prophet (SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) has given much prominence on attaining Laylathul Qadr. He (SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) also commanded His Companions (Sahabah) to seek for it on the odd nights of the last ten nights of the month of Ramadaan, and encouraged them to stand and worship therein.

Prophet (SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) performed I’thikaaf during the last ten days of the month of Ramadan and encouraged the Sahabah to stay in I’thikaaf as well. One of the most important objectives of staying in I’thikaaf by Prophet (SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) was to seek Laylathul Qadr.

Hazrat`Aisha (RadhiyAllahu Anha) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan. (Sahih al-Bukhari 2017)

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (RadhiyAllahu Anhu) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Whoever fasted the month of Ramadan out of sincere Faith (i.e. belief) and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his past sins will be forgiven, and whoever stood for the prayers in the night of Qadr out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 2014)

Dua to be recited on the Laylathul Qadr

‘اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي.’

Hazrat`Aisha (RadhiyAllahu Anha) narrated: “I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what is your view if I know when the Night of Al-Qadr is, then what should I say in it?” He said: ‘Say: “O Allah, indeed You are Pardoning, [Generous,] You love pardon, so pardon me (Allāhumma innaka `Afuwwun [Karīmun], tuḥibbul-`afwa fa`fu `annī).’” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3513)

May Almighty Allah bless us with the opportunity of attaining the night which is virtuous than 1000 months, Laylathul Qadr and its entire blessings.
