A delegation representing the Joint Opposition paid an official visit to the Head Office of the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU) on 08 July 2026, where they held discussions with members of the ACJU Executive Committee.

The meeting formed part of the Joint Opposition’s ongoing programme of engagement with places of worship and leading religious institutions across the country.

Representing the ACJU were the Acting President, General Secretary, Treasurer, Vice Presidents, Acting Assistant General Secretaries, and members of the Executive Committee.

The Joint Opposition delegation comprised its Hon. Chairman, Professor G. L. Peiris; former Hon. Members of Parliament Vajira Abeywardena, Lasantha Alagiyawanna, Mahinda Amaraweera, Hon. Member of Parliament Faizer Musthapha; former Hon. Governor of the Western Province Azath Salley; together with several other political representatives.

Welcoming the delegation, the General Secretary of the ACJU, Ash-Shaikh M. Arkam Nooramith, introduced the members of the Executive Committee present at the meeting and provided an overview of the ACJU’s nationwide activities, services, and community programmes.

Addressing the gathering thereafter, the Chairman of the Joint Opposition introduced the alliance and outlined its vision and commitment to working with mutual understanding towards the progress and development of the country.

Members of the Joint Opposition subsequently elaborated on the objectives and policies of the alliance and explained the rationale behind their coming together as a strong and united opposition.

During the discussions, the General Secretary of the ACJU, Ash-Shaikh M. Arkam Nooramith, highlighted the bitter experiences endured by the Muslim community in Sri Lanka over the years and emphasized the need to ensure that appropriate and lasting solutions are reached to address those concerns.

He further stressed that, in a democratic nation, opposition parties have a responsibility to extend their cooperation to constructive initiatives undertaken by the democratically elected Government while discharging their own duties effectively within the framework of the Constitution. He also underscored that political parties should never endorse or engage in attempts to gain political advantage through hate speech or by fostering communal divisions.

Expressing his views, the Acting President of the ACJU, Ash-Shaikh M.H.M. Burhan, stated that, as a religious organization, the ACJU aspires to see mutual understanding, harmony, and peaceful coexistence prevail among all segments of society. He further called upon political leaders to draw lessons from the past and refrain from promoting ethnic or communal sentiments that could create tension and division among the people for political gain.

The meeting concluded with the presentation of the Sinhala translation of the Holy Qur’an, published by the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama, to the visiting delegation.
